Plot: Set during the golden summer of 1972, Vada Sultenfuss is a precocious, hypochondriac 11-year-old tomboy who feels deeply misunderstood. Living in a funeral home managed by her emotionally distant, widowed father, her world revolves around her obsession with illness and death. Her life begins to shift when her father hires Shelly, a free-spirited makeup artist who brings warmth back into the somber house. Alongside her loyal, equally outcast best friend Thomas J. Sennett, Vada navigates the bittersweet waters of adolescence, experiencing her very first kiss, the pain of growing pains, and a devastating loss that forces her to finally embrace the true beauty of life and love.
